Overview

Located in the heart of Lisbon at Largo da Graça 105, Sant'Avó offers a genuine taste of Portuguese cuisine that stands apart from the usual tourist spots. This charming restaurant invites both locals and visitors to experience traditional dishes crafted with care and authenticity. The atmosphere strikes a fine balance between cozy and elegant, enhanced by thoughtfully curated decor—menus presented in old books and pot stands that echo the same theme—creating an intimate yet welcoming space.

The highlight here lies in their main dishes, which celebrate Portugal's rich culinary heritage. From the tender rabbit and the iconic arroz de marisco to the hearty pork cheeks and chanfana (Portuguese goat stew), each plate delivers bold, robust flavors. The duck rice with sausage is particularly praised for its generous portions and rich taste, making it perfect for sharing. Seafood lovers will find delight in the fresh amêijoas and fried shrimp, while starters like sausage croquettes and a warming vegetable soup set the tone for a satisfying meal.

Beyond the dishes, the experience at Sant'Avó is elevated by attentive service. The staff’s warmth and subtle humor ensure diners feel comfortable and valued throughout their visit. Many return, impressed not only by the food but by the thoughtful touches—fresh rice served with takeaways, for instance—that demonstrate genuine care. Such hospitality combined with quality cooking results in a fine dining experience that remains surprisingly affordable.

Sant'Avó appeals especially to food enthusiasts eager to explore traditional Portuguese flavors in an authentic setting. Its location in a quieter part of Lisbon makes it an inviting escape from the bustle, encouraging guests to savor each dish without rush. Desserts like the rich chocolate mousse, generously portioned, provide a perfect end to the meal, balancing sweetness with tradition.

All things considered, Sant'Avó is more than a restaurant; it’s a culinary gem that respects Portugal’s food culture while delivering excellent value and memorable hospitality. Whether you’re a local or traveler seeking an honest and heartfelt dining experience, this spot deserves a top place on your Lisbon itinerary.

I have been in Lisbon for 2 weeks and this is the best place I’ve found to eat Portuguese food. At first I was worried that it would be just another tourist trap, as we have felt scammed many times in other restaurants in Lisbon despite good google reviews unfortunately. But I was really really surprised by the fine dining experience that they gave us at such affordable prices. main dish can feeds two people easily ! The goat stew was really delicious and full flavor. Chocolate mousse was very good and is also enough for 2 because it’s so rich. Good cost performance and the best service we had in Lisbon. it’s quite a gem. I’m happy we ended our Lisbon trip with this as our last dinner. It might be the only restaurant that worth recommending to people in Lisbon from my experience so far.

We felt very comfortable in the restaurant, and once the dishes arrived, we were genuinely impressed by the excellent value for money. The food was extremely flavorful, and we were both delighted with our meals. The portions were so generous that we had to ask to have more than half of it packed to take away, and they even added some freshly prepared rice for us. We also thoroughly enjoyed the dessert.

A lady I sat next to on the plane recommended this restaurant to me so I had to try it out. I came for dinner a couple of weeks ago, ordered the chanfana (Portuguese style goat meat) and tigelada, everything was really good. Service was good, the staff were very friendly and helpful and had a great sense of humour. The decor was amazing, the menus were written in old books and the pot stands were also the books. Definitely would come back here again and recommend to anyone going to Lisbon.

An absolute gem! We had the goat (to share), lime mouse and poached pear - all cooked to perfection. Our waiter was quietly spoken and attentive, making our experience memorable. My husband tried the Amendla Amarga - but found it not to his liking and reminiscent of almond cake icing. But of course we are here to try things in the menu!

Sant Avo is one of those rare places that instantly makes you feel at home. From the moment we walked in, it felt like being at grandma’s house — warm, cozy, and full of heart. The food was absolutely delicious, simple in the best possible way, full of flavor and clearly made with love. Every dish tasted homemade and comforting. The staff was incredibly kind and welcoming, making us feel more like guests than customers. If you’re in Lisbon and looking for a place with soul, amazing food, and genuine hospitality, Sant Avo is a must-visit. Thank you

A delightful find, which doesn't seem that easy in Lisbon. After travelling through Cordoba and Seville for a few weeks, we had been spoilt for delicious, affordable dishes in lovely authentic restaurants. Granted, it isn't so much a tapas based experience in Portugal, we had been longing for some properly fresh Portuguese fare that we could share and enjoy in a non-touristy location. This fitted what we wanted perfectly. The staff are so great - friendly, funny, but professional and courteous. The food was incredibly flavoursome and we took home half of my Octopus dish as I was so full. Such an enjoyable evening.
